Last year, in 2022, John Law and Jon Lloyd toured the UK for the Arts Council, appearing in major cathedrals such as Gloucester, Durham, Truro, Malmesbury Abbey and Christchurch Priory, presenting John’s project Renaissance, which mixes samples of sacred vocal music with electronics and improvised saxophone and keyboard. The result was mesmerising… a sort of Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble meets Ambient Chill! They are both regular performers here in Tincleton Gallery and they played some of this for us in Tincleton last year, in November of 2022. That first concert led to the start of a new duo project, Naissance, and a stunning new recording set for release in late 2023. They’ll be sharing some of this music with us on the Saturday. Also on the Friday John Law will be playing some of his solo piano pieces – so note the Friday and the Saturday are two different concerts and treat yourself by coming on both days.

Friday 10 November – “The Last Dance” – John Law solo piano
John will be playing a selection of his recent solo piano compositions, as well as maybe the odd surprise arrangement of a well known tune. John’s compositions range from simple, beautiful melodies to highly intricate rhythmic explorations, quite often exploring multiple lines, giving the impression of him having at least three hands! An exciting blend of music drawing from his wide experience in fields as diverse as classical, composed music, jazz and freely improvised music.

Saturday 11 November – John Law & Jon Lloyd piano & saxophone duo – “Naissance”
Following on from the Tincleton debut of Naissance last year, John Law (piano/samples) and Jon Lloyd (saxophones), both long-term colleagues who have been working together for over 30 years now, decided, so successful was the concert, to record this new project early this year. The result was a hypnotically beautiful album, with deceptively simple, minimalist tunes. Set to be one of the releases of 2023! An extension of their earlier Renaissance, which toured to great acclaim in major UK cathedrals and sacred spaces, the duo will also be playing a couple of the ambient compositions from that as well, playing freely over vocal samples. The result is one of meditational beauty.
“Thank you for creating this utterly moving coming-together of beauty” an audience member at Renaissance
