
Join us on Fri 3 Sep and Sat 4 Sep 2021 for the rescheduled concerts by Melissa Phelps (cello) & Caroline Palmer (piano), for a programme of three piano and cello sonatas. Both are professors at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London who have splendid globetrotting careers. Now they are travelling to play for us in Dorset’s most intimate concert venue. They will play the same programme on the Fri 3 Sep and the Sat 4 Sep – Debussy, Beethoven, and Bridge.

Melissa Phelps has demonstrated a wide range of musical interests throughout her career. She has played throughout the world as soloist, recitalist and chamber musician and is a highly respected teacher. She has played concertos with the London Sinfonietta, the Bournemouth and BBC Welsh Symphony orchestras; recitals and chamber music at many international festivals, including Edinburgh, Cheltenham, Bath, Kuhmo, Maggio Musicale; and the International Musicians Seminar in Cornwall. Her chamber music collaborations have included performances with Sándor Végh, Salvatore Accardo, Bruno Giuranna, Thomas Zehetmair, the Nash Ensemble and the Trio of London. She has given recitals in all the main London concert halls and recorded for BBC radio and television.
Melissa was appointed a professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama at the age of 29; she taught there for several years and at the same time at the Yehudi Menuhin School. Her current professorship at the RCM was preceded by an appointment at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.

Caroline Palmer studied at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Edith Vogel and later continued her studies with Peter Wallfisch and Hans Keller. She was a finalist in the Busoni competition and has played in the USA and in much of Europe. Well-known as both a solo pianist and chamber musician, she has recorded for British, Swiss, French, German and Italian radio stations and has made televised appearances in Italy and Bulgaria.
Caroline’s latest CDs include the cello sonatas of Saint-Saens, Faure and Busoni and the Brahms violin sonatas with Krzysztof Smietana. She has made numerous recordings as soloist and chamber musician for the BBC.
Caroline has been a piano professor at the Guildhall since 1990, where she coaches chamber repertoire as well as teaching individual students.

– Pre booking and prepayment only. All guests must give contact etc details.
– Seating will be allocated by us in advance. We will flex exact mix depending on demand and any constraints. Ask quickly if you have a larger party.
– We will give refunds if we need to cancel the concert for whatever reason. We will not refund if you need to cancel as that would disadvantage the musician(s), unless we can resell your seat.
– You must respect our Covid social distancing requirements, which will in turn comply with Government requirements. For the time being this means that no particular restrictions are anticipated unless Covid restrictions are reintroduced by Government.
– As usual drinks & nibbles will be served, but exactly how and where will depend on the weather.
– All concerts start playing at 8pm. Please arrive after 7:30pm.
