Fri 12 & Sat 13 April 2024 : Madeleine Mitchell (violin) and Motoki Hirai (piano)

Madeleine Mitchell

This concert by Madeleine Mitchell on violin with Motoki Hirai on piano is part of the UK-Japan Friendship Tour 2024 and after leaving us in Tincleton they will be touring Japan from the end of April performing in Tokyo, Kyoto, Nigata and other cities. Both are notable international musicians, with Madeline described by The Times as ‘one of the UK’s liveliest musical forces (and) foremost violinists’; whilst Motoki has performed in over 100 countries and the programme features premieres of two of his own compositions and arrangements. The programme features Beethoven Sonata No.10 op.96 and Grieg Sonata No. 3 in C Minor plus short pieces from Delius, Holst-Hirai, Hirai, and Elgar.

Fri 15 & Sat 16 March 2024 : Mike Denham et al – jazz

Mike Denham

On Friday 15 March : “Clarinet Marmalade” – Following the success of last year’s performance, reeds player Trevor Whiting joins Mike Denham at the piano for an evening of duets. Trevor is one of the finest clarinettists on the UK jazz scene and, not surprisingly, he is first choice for several London-based ensembles. However, Trevor lives in Dorset and describes Tincleton Gallery as one of his favourite venues. Expect to hear this reflected in his playing as he and Mike explore the repertoire from Sidney Bechet to Benny Goodman, with several stops between.

Then on Sat 16 March : “Ragtime meets Boogie” – solos and duets. International blues and boogie woogie star Julian Phillips joins ragtime expert Mike Denham to explore these two remarkable, contrasting piano styles which emerged alongside one another in the early 20th Century. Julian has a great reputation for his wide and varied repertoire, playing in a truly authentic way. He appears at festivals around Europe and the USA alongside other top performers in the genre.

Spring 2024 mixed art exhibition : by gallery artists & guest artists

"Pinks", collagraph by Mary Gillett

Our Spring 2024 mixed exhibition features over a dozen of our gallery artists, plus four guest artists, including a range of sculptures, oils, and prints. Devon-based Mary Gillett has produced four gorgeous collagraphs which we exhibit along with the corresponding block. These contrast with more visionary oils from London-based Consuelo Child-Villiers. Superb seacapes and coastal oils from Kim Pragnell and a charcoal study that deftly contrasts curvature of the boats with the linearity of the yard architecture. Bristol-based Ruth Ander hangs a variety of her monprints. The Hampshire artist Philippa Headley adds her impressionistic landscape oils. Imogen Bittner has some new textile pieces as well as work from London-based guest artist Chloe Fremantle and pieces by local guest artist Sarah Batt. A variety of raku ceramics are with us from London-based artist Alison Wear as well as stonework from Sarah Moore and the fine metal/glass/stone scuptures from Bershire based Johannes von Stumm are joined by pieces from London based sculptor Almuth Tebbenhoff.

Fri 23 & Sat 24 Feb 2024 : Ida Pelliccioli – classical piano

Ida Pelliccioli (photo by Nick Guttridge)

We start 2024 with the superb classical panist Ida Pelliccioli who is travelling from Paris to play for us. Ida Pelliccioli was born in Bergamo, Italy. She studied at the Nice Conservatoire de Région and at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris. During her studies, Ida Pelliccioli was awarded several scholarships. Ida chose to avoid the international competition circuit and, before becoming a full-time pianist, received a double master diploma at the Sorbonne University – in Italian Literature and in Ancient Greek History. Ida tours internationally as well as teaching at Paris Conservatoire with a class of 35 students. We are thrilled that she is travelling from Paris especially to play for us in Tincleton. The programme will be D. Scarlatti, W.A. Mozart, M. Blasco de Nebra, and F. Schubert. The inspiration behind this programme is the forgotten music of Spanish composer from Sevilla, Manuel Blasco de Nebra (1750-1784). The heir to Scarlatti in many respects, he was moreover a composer well aware of what was happening elsewhere in Europe in the 1770s. His expressive world is far more searching than Scarlatti, a quality that sometimes reminds us of the music of Mozart and Haydn and pre announces Schubert and even Chopin.

Fri 15 & Sat 16 Dec 2023 : Duncan Honeybourne – classical piano

Duncan Honeybourne

Join us for this pre-Christmas solo piano treat from Duncan Honeybourne. He will play piano music with a Christmas theme and introduce us to his recent explorations of the music of German Romantic Woldemar Bargiel, the half-brother of Clara Schumann; and music by Kent housewife Jessy Reason (1878-1938), whose luxuriant and impressionistic music is currently being rediscovered and explored. The full programme is below, also with works by Robert Schumann, Anatoly Lyadov, Felix Mendelssohn, and Leopold Godowsky.

Duncan Honeybourne enjoys a diverse profile as a pianist and in music education. Following his concerto debuts at Symphony Hall, Birmingham, and the National Concert Hall, Dublin, he made recital debuts in London, Paris, and at international festivals in Belgium and Switzerland. Commended by International Piano magazine for his “glittering performances”, he has toured extensively in the UK, Ireland and Europe as soloist and chamber musician, appearing at many major venues and leading festivals. He has broadcast for over 20 years on BBC Radio 3 and more than 20 radio networks worldwide, including French, Swiss and Austrian Radio, ABC (Australia) and Radio New Zealand. Duncan has premiered over 70 new piano works and his many recordings reflect his long association with 20th and 21st century British piano music.

He teaches at the Royal Academy of Music Junior Academy, the University of Southampton and Sherborne School, and is Founder/Artistic Director of the Weymouth Lunchtime Chamber Concerts near his home in Dorset.
